Nanomanufacturing is no longer the next frontier. It’s in action today, and it is improving products and processes and saving manufacturers money along the way.

This March, nanomanufacturing experts will be gathering in Boston to share their knowledge with other manufacturing professionals at the NanoManufacturing Conference and Exhibits organized by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. In addition to discussions on mid- to long-term applications of this smallest of technologies, there will be information on how it is already impacting the industry as evidenced in these five ways.

1)    Materials – Nanotechnology is creating exceptionally light, yet extremely tough, materials, such as graphene. Nano composites are uniquely customizable to adhere to other materials. They are currently used in golf clubs and tennis rackets, with expectations that they will transform the aerospace, defense and transportation industries in the not-too-distant future.

2)    Coatings – Nanotechnology is enabling coatings to have numerous beneficial properties that are proving very marketable. Nanocoatings are known to be a thermal barrier, flame retardant, ultraviolet resistance, self and easy cleaning, wear resistant, friction reducing, corrosion resistant, anti-scratch resistance, antibacterial and anti-fingerprint. They can even be self healing. Nanocoatings are used in myriad industries including automotive, defense, household cleaners, construction and exterior protection, with a very promising future in many more fields.

3)    Energy Collection and Storage – Surface-to-volume ratios give nano particles most of their power. For example, a golf ball by volume equals the surface of a playing card. That same golf ball by nano particles has a surface area equivalent to four football fields. These particles use light more efficiently which is improving the efficiency and cost of solar panels.

4)    Lighting – Quantum dots are nanoparticles of a semiconductor material with unique optical and electrical properties. A manufacturer can precisely control the size of a quantum dot to determine the color of light emitted. In addition to enabling the manufacturing of LED lights, quantum dots are used in electroluminescent displays and solid-state lighting.

5)    Manufacturing Processes – Self-assembly is a branch of nanotechnology in which objects, devices and systems form structures without external prodding. Biological systems use self-assembly to construct various molecules and structures. Think of it as LEGOS® that assemble themselves. This process is currently being used in computer chips, and has potential benefits for water purification, sanitation, agriculture, alternative energy and medicine.

“More than 1,300 products have already made it to market using nanotechnology, with many more in the pipeline,” said Lauralyn McDaniel, the conference manager. “This conference provides an opportunity for manufacturers from almost any industry to either be introduced to nanomanufacturing or discover the latest advances in the technology.”

Charter schools are a solution for extreme bureaucratic environment as well as stringent regulations within the waning public schools. Despite the existence of certain challenges, charter schools are finding ways to expand without compromising on autonomy and results. Presently, public charter schools operate in 41 states and the District of Columbia in the US. These schools are emerging as strong competitors to the traditional schools as an increasing number of students are seeking entry into them in order to make use of the free and high class education provided by them. Charter Schools, over the years, has exhibited improved academic achievement among disadvantaged students, and this has increased their popularity in communities suffering from low quality public school education. Donations from philanthropists, and the increasing importance given to these schools by certain local governments are few factors that would fuel growth of charter schools in the near future.

The slowdown in the economy as well as tightened credit that resulted from the sub-prime mortgage crisis, affected all private sources that financed the charter school facilities. In addition, the reluctance of investors to provide finances to low rated credits prevented the access of charter schools to the tax exempt bond market. The finance issuance to charter schools plunged by around 35% in 2008, as compared to the year 2007. Several commercial lenders curtailed the community development lending activities, and further tightened the underwriting criteria. Meanwhile, most of the non-profit organizations tightened loan origination to charter schools and several other program areas. However, in the year 2009, the state of the private financing sources revived to a certain extent, and financing options are expected to open for providing for charter schools through the near future.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, invested a considerable amount on improving local and state education systems. The ‘Race to the Top’ Fund, in particular, provided US$ 7.75 billion in two phases, as competitive grant for states. Charter schools were given high priority in the Race to the Top, featuring 40 (8%) out of the 500 points available in the race. The number of Charter schools among all public schools in the US increased from 2.0% in academic year 1999-2000 to over 5.0% in 2010-11. Rising enrollment in charter schools is leading to a decline in the share of enrollments in other district schools. However, around 11 states across the US were in favor of the traditional schools, and did not allow the establishment of new charter schools in the beginning of 2011, while few others placed a cap on the number of charter schools.

Although there has been a massive protest among the teachers’ unions, certain politicians and others towards the virtual charter school system, the sector is set to grow in the near future. Major growth drivers for the sector include public funding, positive results from studies that indicate high level of satisfaction among the parents, under-performance of public schools, and requirement of lesser capital costs. The virtual charters or the cyber charters are a part of the evolving home school segment, operating entirely through online curriculum. Nearly 220 thousand students enrolled into cyber charter schools in the US in the year 2010. Moreover, the enrollment into these schools is increasing at a rapid rate of over 40% per year.

Moving quickly on Christmas Day after the US Senate voted 86 – 14 to pass the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 (NDAA) which according to the American Civil Liberties Union allows for the indefinite military detention of American citizens without charge or trial, Montanans announced the launch of recall campaigns against Senators Max Baucus and Jonathan Tester, who voted for the bill.

Montana is one of nine states with provisions that say that the right of recall extends to recalling members of its federal congressional delegation, pursuant to Montana Code 2-16-603, on the grounds of physical or mental lack of fitness, incompetence, violation of oath of office, official misconduct, or conviction of certain felony offenses.

Section 2 of Montana Code 2-16-603 reads:

“(2) A public officer holding an elective office may be recalled by the qualified electors entitled to vote for the elective officer’s successor.”

The website Ballotpedia.org cites eight other states which allow for the recall of elected federal officials: Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wisconsin. New Jersey’s federal recall law was struck down when a NJ state judge ruled that “the federal Constitution does not allow states the power to recall U.S. senators,” despite the fact the Constitution explicitly allows, by not disallowing (“prohibited” in the Tenth Amendment,) the states the power to recall US senators and congressmen:

“The powers not…prohibited…are reserved to the States…or to the people.” – Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Montana law requires stated grounds for recall which show conformity to the allowed grounds for recall. The draft language of the Montana petitions, “reason for recall” reads:

“The Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees all U.S citizens:

“a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed…”

According to Ralph Lopez of the Salem News “[The] National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 (NDAA 2011) permanently abolishes the Sixth Amendment right to a jury trial, ‘for the duration of hostilities’ in the War on Terror, which was defined by President George W. Bush as ‘task which does not end’ to a joint session of Congress on September 20, 2001.

Those who voted Aye on December 15th, 2011, Bill of Rights Day, for the NDAA have attempted to grant powers which cannot be granted, which violate both the spirit and the letter of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

The Montana Recall Act stipulates that officials including US senators can only be recalled for physical or mental lack of fitness, incompetence, violation of the oath of office, official misconduct, or conviction of a felony offense.”

Montana residents William Crain and Stewart Rhodes are spearheading the drive. Mr. Crain is an artist. Mr. Rhodes is an attorney, Yale Law School graduate, and the national president of the organization Oath Keepers, a group of military and law enforcement officers, both former and active duty, who vow to uphold their Oath to the US Constitution and to disobey illegal orders which constitute attacks on their fellow citizens.

Rhodes said:

“These politicians from both parties betrayed our trust, and violated the oath they took to defend the Constitution. It’s not about the left or right, it’s about our Bill of Rights. Without the Bill of Rights, there is no America. It is the Crown Jewel of our Constitution, and the high-water mark of Western Civilization.”

Rhodes noted that:

“Two time Medal of Honor winner Marine General Smedley Butler once said “There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. Time to fight. “

Butler famously ended his career as a Marine General by touring the country with his speech and book denouncing war, “War is a Racket.”Butler confessed that he had spent most of his life as a “high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers…a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism…”

Eighteen states at present have recall laws, ten states recall laws do not apply to federal officials. For these and other states to recall federal officials, state legislatures would have to first pass or amend such laws.

Rising on the House floor to oppose the bill based on the military detention provisions for Americans, Rep. Tom McClintock said before the House vote:

” today, we who have sworn fealty to that Constitution sit to consider a bill that affirms a power contained in no law and that has the full potential to crack the very foundation of American liberty.”

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said in opposing the final NDAA:

”This bill also contains misguided provisions that in the name of fighting terrorism essentially authorize the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens without charges.”

And in a New York Times op-ed piece by two retired four-star U.S. Marine generals, Charles Krulak and Joseph Hoar, Krulak and Hoar said that “Due process would be a thing of the past.”

Montana would be the recall drive to be launched as a result of the vote for the NDAA military detentions provisions. A number of Facebook pages appeared after the passage of the bill from locations across the country.
